Cartoonists’ traditional villains — corrupt politicians, war, racism and crime — have made way for a growing evil that threatens our planet with extinction.

To cartoonists, times of crisis are shots of adrenaline, and the ecological crisis has roused them from around the world to take up their pens to do battle. Brilliant cartoonists from more than thirty countries have joined their colleagues in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Some use savage strokes, striking graphics and imaginative symbolism; others, biting satire, wit and humor. All have devoted their unique talents in documenting man's failure as custodian of our fragile heritage.

This collection of outstanding environmental cartoons and graphics dramatizes the need to mobilize the world's human resources to save our endangered planet. The images cover environmental concerns about the air, land, water, and life itself.

The images are memorable — among them: from Sweden, Karlsson's seagull in a life struggle to free itself from oil-polluted waters; from Spain, Mena's smoke-filled skies and factories as backdrop for a newly-hatched black egg; from France, Pancho's oil spill forming a death's head; and from Norway, Hagen's brutal symbol of the earth as Man's toilet.

In 1989, Our Endangered Planet was exhibited at the Citizen's Summit on the Environment in Moscow and later toured the former Soviet Republics. At the invitation of the United Nations, this extraordinary exhibition was expanded and brought to Rio de Janeiro for the 1992 Earth Summit. It was the major exhibition at Rio Centre, the site of the historic summit of 110 heads of state.
